Meet Our Founder, Melat Haile

Melat Haile is Ethiopian by birth and spent her early years moving between Africa and Europe. That perspective shapes how Vril works: close to origin, and fluent in what international buyers need.

Her professional training is in the sciences, with a background in analytical chemistry and advanced clinical medicine. In both fields, a result only counts when it can be measured, repeated and documented.

Coffee has been part of her life from the start. When she turned to sourcing, she began where her roots run deepest, in Ethiopia's forests, communities and growing traditions.

Why Ethiopian Coffee Sourcing Needed a Different Approach

Roasters love Ethiopian coffee for its florals, fruit and complexity. Many also know the frustrations that come with it.

A lot cups beautifully on the sample table, then arrives tasting different. A shipment slips without warning. Records are incomplete when a customer or auditor asks where the coffee came from.

None of this reflects the quality of Ethiopian coffee. It reflects gaps in the system around it, and systems can be fixed.

What Science Taught Us About Coffee

In analytical chemistry and clinical medicine, variability is never romanticized. It is understood, measured and managed.

We apply that same thinking to every Ethiopian lot we offer:

•       Defined specifications. Moisture, water activity, defect counts, screen size and cup profile are set before a lot is sold.

•       Multiple checkpoints. Quality is checked from processing and drying through milling, pre-shipment, U.S. arrival and warehouse storage.

•       Complete documentation. Every lot ships with a Certificate of Analysis, cupping notes, processing records and a traceability summary.

•       Built-in accountability. If a lot misses its contracted terms, we offer replacement, credit or buy-back.

How We Source in Ethiopia

We buy direct from farmers, from cooperatives and from producers who harvest wild forest coffee. That direct relationship lets us trace every lot back to its washing station and the people behind it.

Ethiopia is the only origin we buy. Our focus covers Yirgacheffe, Guji, Sidama, Harrar, Limu, Jimma and Bench Maji, from high-altitude washed lots to sun-dried naturals and wild forest coffee.

Staying with one origin means we know each region, each station and each harvest in depth. That knowledge is what keeps profiles steady from year to year.

My training taught me that a result is only as reliable as the precision, records and accountability behind it. When I turned to Ethiopian coffee, I saw an origin with extraordinary quality and too much uncertainty around it.

I did not want to reinvent Ethiopian coffee. I wanted to protect it, with clear specifications, careful checkpoints and records roasters can rely on.
